The mechanism of action for Wegovy  (Semaglutide) involves its ability to mimic the action of an important gut hormone: glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1).  It works by helping regulate appetite, reducing hunger, cravings and food noise, but also promoting a feeling of fullness, which leads to weight loss.

Some clients may start to see weight loss within a few weeks of starting Wegovy 0.25mg. However, consistent and sustained weight loss typically occurs over several months of therapy as the dose is gradually increased through the titration process. Clinical trials have shown that Wegovy may achieve weight loss of up to 14.9% of body weight when used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Results may vary among individuals.

Wegovy is injected subcutaneously (under the skin into fatty tissue) once a week using the prescribed prefilled Wegovy flextouch device and an appropriate needle (4mm-12mm). Your healthcare provider will instruct you on the proper injection technique and suitable locations such as the stomach, outer thigh, or back of the arm.

Wegovy weight loss injections are available in five different strengths. Each individual must complete a minimum of four injections at each strength before considering a dose increase. 

During clinical trials, the best weight loss injection result was achieved with the highest maintenance dose Wegovy 2.4mg. However, this should always be done under the guidance of a weight loss prescriber, considering clinical appropriateness and side effect management. Finding the lowest effective dose is the best strategy to sustainable weight loss results.

Common side effects of Wegovy may include decreased appetite, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, headache and abdominal discomfort. Certain GLP-1 triggers, such as large meals, greasy food, spicy food, and fizzy drinks, may exacerbate or cause these symptoms. These side effects are typically mild to moderate and tend to improve over time.

Wegovy is a prescription medication and should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare provider. It is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with a history of pancreatitis, or those with certain medical conditions.

The safety and efficacy of combining Wegovy with other weight loss medications have not been established. It is important to inform your healthcare provider about all medications, supplements, and treatments you are currently using.
